November 27 Junior Round Robin

What a great day! Sunday November 27 started with the winds and ended with some beautiful weather and just as beautiful tennis.

We had our second round robin event of 2011 after the successful April event. In this spectacular tournament we had four divisions based on standard, not age which is a nice change from the normal tournaments and gets the over achievers playing a higher level and gives everyone else a great level playing field.

In division one there was a dominant player, with Nicholas Marquis sweeping all before him to claim the prize. It must have been nice as the older brother to claim the title over second placed Dominic Marquis. The other player to excel was Marc Lindberg who missed out on a placing by one solitary game. Of course these were the cream of the crop for the day and had the worst of the winds to contend with. We saw great play and great sportsmanship throughout.

The division two title went to one of our upcoming New Zealand travelers in Finn Corbett. He played some outstanding tennis with some sublime winners mixed with controlled defence. He defeated Harry Kooros in the final 6-3 in what was a really nice display of tennis. Liam Feely played well also, as did Lizzie Lamond and Lleyton Gayford, who were unlucky not make it through to the final.

Ryan Emerick took out the division three section, continuing some excellent results he has had over the past 12 months, always figuring in the big games at the end of comps and tournaments. His win over Hanan Chidiac in the final was exceptional, as was Hanan’s achievement in getting through to the last match. Hanan won her group with 26 games, four ahead of Georgia Barr with Dan Wylie a further two points adrift. In the other group it was Gigi Dunn who pushed Ryan all the way before finishing only three games behind.

Division four had the most players with 19 split into three groups. They had the afternoon session where the wind subsided and the little guys could play their best tennis. Group 1 was so close with only one point separating the top three. In the end it was Benoe Efira who won through to the play-offs with 22 games won. The fast-finishing Carl Querin and Austin Lockhart finishing oh so close.

The same situation happened in group 2 with the final matches of the day for the pools deciding this group winner. Isabella Knowles had a two game lead going into the last match. However six year old Cameron Poulos won his match 6-0, meaning Isabella had to get four games to advance. In the end Ethan Holloway kept her to three games and Cameron advanced. What a nail-biter.

Charlie Hill won group 3 with a great win over Charlie Pinczi. This result enabling Charlie Hill to advance. Ben Mitchell in his first ever tournament finished an admirable third.

This brought us to the final where we started with a three all draw between Benoe Efira and Charlie Hill. Benoe and Cameron Poulos then also had a three all draw. This meant it came down to the final match between Cameron and Charlie to decide the placing’s. This match was of a quality like they have never played before, amazing shot making with very few errors for players their age. In the end Cameron prevailed with a 4-2 win, meaning he won the day with Benoe second and Charlie a most valiant third.

Well done to all players and we look forward to the 2012 version of these events.
